April 2024 Tie Binder Newsletter

Let’s Go Green

For many years we have been collecting soda cans for recycling (taken to firehouses for their collection for burn victims). We remove the flip tops on top of cans and donate them to Dayton Children’s Hospital for Ronald McDonald House.

NOW—we are placing a container in Fellowship Hall for plastic bottles. These will be taken to residential recycling locations. Our office has been recycling paper for years. A list of consumer recyclables is on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board.

Six of our ladies got a tour at Montgomery Environmental Learning Center. What an eyeopener. We began in a new facility for tours and information. We viewed videos at this resource center with interactive exhibits. There was a viewing area of the largest transfer center (by volume) in North America! We saw truck after truck bring waste materials to the tipping floor. 2700 Tons are brought a day. Then after being pushed to the end of the area, the trash is put into semi trucks to haul the waste to a Cincinnati landfill. Two Dayton landfills have been closed. At one time waste was burned in incinerators but no longer. All recyclables are taken to Rumpke Recycling where items are sorted for reuse. Once a week (Tuesday) during summer, you can take paint, batteries, light bulbs, cleaners, gasoline to the Household Hazardous Waste collection (1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.). Daily residential tires, yard waste, residential recycling can be dropped off. Styrofoam is collected at one of four areas in the county once a quarter.

After seeing so much that is thrown away, we decided as a church we want to promote Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We want to do better in our church building by having less waste. We want to encourage members to also do better at their residents. God created the earth and we are His stewards!

Diaconate Worship Board

The last couple months have been a busy and exciting time in the life of DLABC.On February 25 we installed Pastor Jeff Perkins as our new pastor. The sanctuary was full of family and friends and folks from other churches. His Installation Service and reception were filled with joy and hope for the future.

Being a bi-vocational pastor (Pastor Jeff is a full-time chaplain for UCHealth) his office hours here are limited. He’s usually available after Sunday service, or if there is an immediate need call or text him at 937-620-5706. He can schedule evening appointments as needed.

During Lent we used an online daily devotional based on the Psalms. The link was emailed out on Ash Wednesday. Each daily devotion was also posted on our Facebook page. Pastor Jeff’s lenten sermons have been inspirational and informative. Holy Week is quickly approaching. All are invited and welcome to join us for our services.

We will be celebrating Palm Sunday on March 24.

We will gather around the tables for an evening Maundy Thursday Service and Supper on March 28 at 6:00 pm. A simple meal will be provided and Communion will be served. On March 31 we celebrate Easter with two services. There will be a Sunrise Service on the front driveway at 7 am, followed by a hot breakfast at 8 am. Our Easter Celebration Service will be at 10 am (an hour earlier than normal). Join us as we celebrate the Risen Lord! There will be no coffee hour after the service.

Thank you to all who ordered Easter Lilies to decorate the sanctuary. You may take them home with you after the 10 am Easter Service. We look forward to April as it brings warmer weather, spring flowers, and an exciting solar eclipse! This world we live in is an amazing place full of wonder! May you find your spirit renewed!
