Dayton Area CROP Hunger Walk – October 11, 2026

What does CROP stand for? In 1947 to help Midwest farm families share their grain with hungry neighbors in the post war era CROP was born. It stood for Christian Rural Overseas Program. The first CROP Walk was held in 1969 in Bismark, ND and raised $25,000. It continues to provide food (and water) to places around the world in need. A newer meaning is Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. It is sponsored by

Church World Service.

This year one-fourth of all funds raised will remain in our area to support the Dayton

Food Bank. We have envelopes for you to ask family, friends, co-workers for donations.

The walk is October 11 and schedule is:

1:00 pm registration and entertainment;

1:30 grand send-off and walk begins;

3:30 walk ends (you can leave earlier).

All this is at Shiloh Church on 5300 Philadelphia Drive in Dayton.

Hungry people in developing countries typically walk as much as six miles a day to get

food, water, and fuel, and to take their goods to market. We walk because they walk. We walk to be in solidarity with their struggle for existence.

Join our CROP Hunger Walk efforts this year. You can walk and get pledges or make a

donation. Donations can be placed in offering plate or in walkers’ envelopes. THANK YOU!!

Church Work Days

DLABC members were busy in July and August, to accomplish many tasks to keep our church building and grounds in excellent condition. A list of work days in July and August follows.

Jul 18, Saturday. Church work day. Much was accomplished to clean the church grounds, and especially to clean up the east of the church building which is greatly overgrown.

Jul 23, Thursday. Jerri Wood's family worked for many hours to cut and stack the many

branches from a huge fallen tree limb towards the middle of the parking lot boundary on the southeast.

Jul 24, Friday. Tim Haugan cut up the remaining large branches and with Brian Woods help loaded-up and took 2 truck-loads of cuttings to the Kettering recycling center.

Aug 12,14. Brian Thompson worked with a contracting company, to remove a 2nd

very large tree limb that fell from the largest tree in the south backyard.

Aug 15, Sunday. Edmund Sasak and Tim Haugan cleaned up a 3rd small tree limb laying on the church parking lot.

Rummage Sale

The rummage sale was held again this year, and was a wonderful success. Proceeds are ~$2800, but also importantly it was a great outreach event for DLABC to care for and bring many new people into our building. Many dozens of people were lined up on the Thursday to purchase items, and many expressed how much they liked the sale. On Friday items were priced at half-price, and on Saturday all items were free. The event required a large amount of work by many DLABC volunteers, and a special thanks to everyone that helped. Items for sale this year came from many outside families; probably 7 or 8 truckloads including from next-door neighbors. A timeline of events follows:

Sunday Jul 19. All items brought upstairs from the storage room.

Monday Jul 20 to Tuesday Jul 29. The multi-purpose and entryways were re-arranged to make room for the items. And all items were organized and priced.

Thursday Jul 30-Aug 1. Sale days, and Saturday after 12 noon items boxed up for delivery to Goodwill. Thankfully the number of boxes was relatively low compared to other years. All boxes loaded into two vehicles, and delivered to Goodwill. Cleanup of the multipurpose room and hallways was continued through the following week. Thanks for the extra volunteers that week.
