ABWM News

Our women met In February and filled 108 Care Bags for folks at Oaks of West

Kettering. The bag included fruit, candy, homemade cookies and a valentine. These bags were delivered and used at their February 14th Valentine’s Day Party. We were asked to return to play BINGO at the facility in April. If you would like to donate prizes or attend, contact our coordinator Judy Teeters.

Thanks to all who donated socks at Christmas time. These will be donated to Dayton

Christian Center. (13 men, 9 women, and 12 children socks).

In March, we will meet on Tuesday March 11 at 10:30 a.m. At 11:30 we will have

special guest Yvonne Watkins, director of Dayton Christian Center. All (men and

women) are invited to hear Ms. Watkins share about what is happening at DCC.

The mission of DCC is to promote community by nurturing children and empowering

families in a Christian environment. They serve the Dayton View Neighborhood. Child

care is provided for children 6 weeks – 12 years. They work with Miami Valley Center

and Preschool Promise for programming for school age children. A nutritious breakfast

and snack is served daily by working with Feeding America, Kids Café. DCC is one of

20+ community outreach ministries in USA of American Baptist Home Mission. They

focus on food distribution, job readiness, Bible study classes, free tax preparation,

education programs and recreational activities.

DCC is in need of new board members. It is a rewarding opportunity to serve. From

our church we have had Rev. C Roland Marcus, Flo Smith-Heizer, Elmer Smith, Ernie

Keucher, Joyce Kelley and Jerri Wood serve on the board. Please pray about this

opportunity and talk to Joyce, Flo, or Jerri if interested.

Church Women United will host the Emma Murray Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, March 15 at 9:30 a.m. at Corinthian Baptist Church, 700 James H. McGee Blvd. Dayton.

Reservations are $10 and need to be made with Jerri Wood by March 3. Carpooling will

be available.

Christian Education

Mark your calendar for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! The Egg Hunt will take place

April 12th at 2:00 PM. Invite your friends, family, and neighbors!

There is a box in the Fellowship Hall for egg stuffing donations. Individually

wrapped candy, small toys, stickers, or erasers would be perfect.

Men’s Fellowship

The men’s fellowship meets for lunch at 11:00 am on the 2nd

Friday of the month, at the Bob Evans on the corner of Linden

and Woodman. It’s a wonderful time to meet and discuss, and

Pastor Bob Heizer gives heartfelt prayers for all. It’s a blessing

Bob is sharing his pastoral gifts for the Men’s Fellowship. All are welcome to join.

Moment for Missions…..

Did you know that 8% of every dollar collected at Dorothy Lane American Baptist

Church is sent to American Baptist Churches of Ohio to support Missions. In addition to

that we also send $75.00 each month to Dayton Christian Center and $75.00 each month to a specific missionary whom we help support. That specific missionary since March 2023 has been Kit Ripley.

KIT's primary ministry is with Imago Art Studio, an outreach of the New Life Center Foundation (NLCF) in northern Thailand. She provides rehabilitative care for survivors of trauma, including sexual abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking and systemic oppression through clinical mental health counseling and art therapy. She also leads community-based workshops and retreats to support spiritual formation and facilitates training in conflict transformation skills, trauma-informed care and creative arts therapy. Kit specializes in reinforcing resilience and helping people process traumatic stress, depression and anxiety. In addition to our financial support, Kit asks for our prayers:

Pray for inner healing for survivors of trauma who participate in mental health counseling and art therapy with Kit.

Pray for strength, wisdom, and vision for the NLCF’s dedicated national staff and board of directors.

Pray that the translated CASKET EMPTY Bible survey curriculum would glorify God and transform lives as people learn about the story of the Bible and the abundant love of Jesus, as shown in the scriptures.

Remembering Liz Durig

Recently DLABC lost one of our long-time members. If you ever met Liz,

you would remember her. If introduced, she might start with, “I’m the most important person here at Dorothy Lane.” That just brings a smile to your face and

that is what she did. Bring a smile to your face….brighten your corner. She

always had a joke to share. Some might make you blush. She joined DLABC in

1966. Serving mostly on the Deacon’s Board. At Ash Wednesday preparing soup

each year and putting extra in the kitchen freezer. When getting around became

harder, she volunteered for at home jobs. Sending cards to homebound

members, sending out memorial thanks, calling to check on folks. She loved

Dorothy Lane and was not shy to say so. She enjoyed singing in the choir and

might play the piano in a pinch. Lester was the light of her life for over 50 years.

And she was SO proud of her family….Michael and Kathy. She wrote a book

about her granddaughter which we have a copy in the church library.

She demonstrated a life illustrated in her favorite song….Brighten the Corner

Where you Are.

Brighten the Corner Where You Are

Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do

Do not wait to shed your light afar

To the many duties ever near you now be true

Brighten the corner where you are

Brighten the corner where you are

Brighten the corner where you are

Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar

Brighten the corner where you are

Just above are clouded skies that you may help to clear

Let not narrow self your way debar

Though into one heart alone may fall your song of cheer

Brighten the corner where you are

Here for all your talent you may surely find a need

Here reflect the bright and Morning Star

Even from your humble hand the Bread of Life may feed

Brighten the corner where you are

Songwriters: Charles Hutchison Gabriel / Ina Duley Ogdon / R Price / Robert Lee Black
